Punahou soccer has begun for 2009/10! We have played several pre-season games against OIA opponents and been successful in all. We began with a scrimmage against Kaiser, 1 week after tryouts. We were able to come away with 2-0 win on two second half goals by Alex Lam. It was a chance to see lots of players play and make the final decisions on who made the team.

We then went to Castle for a chance to see how the make up of the team was coming along after the final cuts were made. The score was 3-0 with goals from Jon Cloutier, Quintin Love and Mountain Mitchell. It was good to play another team and get some much needed game experience together.

Traveling all the way to Kapolei for a 7pm game seemed a bit far and late, especially after a delayed start due to a girl's game earlier, but the condition of the field made it all worthwhile. It was finally a chance for us to see how we could play on a big field with excellent grass. The boys showed their appreciation by moving the ball around very well and dominating a very good Kapolei team that tied for 3rd place in the State with us last year. Final score 2-0 on goals from Cade Ito and Scott Granger.

It was not time for camp. We went all the way to Kaena Point and Camp Erdman for a weekend of bonding and preparation for our upcoming season. The camp allowed us to watch the boys interact in non-soccer activities and we were impressed how they all got along very well and did most activities together as a team, not by force. They had a chance to eat together, play basketball, volleyball, football and even swim. We even almost lost the Lam brothers to the surf and reefs of the North Shore as they decided to take Coach Bernie's kayaks out for a spin. We all got a good laugh after the initial scare and rescue.

At camp we were able to play in the 2nd Annual Waialua Pre-season soccer tournament. We played Pearl City on Friday afternoon and had little difficulty in cruising to a 4-0 victory. Didn't have statisticians for the game, but I know that Colin Williams scored 2 goals in the win. On Saturday we had to reschedule our game with Mililani and ended up playing a rather weak Kahuku team, but the chance to play was beneficial in letting the boys get time on the field together. A final score of 7-1 allowed all players to get good playing time. Goals were scored by Alex Lam-2, Quintin Love-2, Sean Hungerfor-2, and Matt Walker-1. We gave up our first goal against us on a penalty kick late in the game.

Saturday night had us up against the host team Waialua. Cade Ito score within 2 minutes of the game, but then Waialua packed in their defense and we proceeded to show our mental fatigue of camp. Numerous chances on goal did not convert and we had to settle for a 1-0 win.

Overall, the camp was a great experience and boys came home tired but a bit closer as a team. At camp we also selected our team captains for the year, Jon Cloutier, Cody Sia and Cade Ito, three very deserving seniors.

In our last game preparation before the ILH season we had a chance to play Moanalua. Despite a decent offensive performance (4 goals), we made numerous defensive mistakes and gave up 4 goals also. With the 4-4 tie it really gave us a chance to look closely at the mistakes that were made and hopefully learn from them now so we won't make them again during the season. The 4 goals against us really left a sour taste in our mouths as we come into our first season game. My hopes are that they will use this as motivation to not let it happen again during the season. I think we are ready to go. Damien is our first game of the 2009/10 ILH season.
