Varsity 1A & 1AA

Punahou School currently has two Varsity teams. We are the only school in the state of Hawai'i to have this. These are the reasons why:

1. There is a great deal of talent at Punahou, we wanted to provide the ability for skilled student-athletes to be able to participate in competitive high school soccer and represent Punahou School. 

2. Prior to having a 1AA team, a significant amount of athletes who did not make Varsity 1A as a junior, ended up quitting competitive soccer or losing interest in the sport. Since we created a 1AA team, at least 50 student-athletes have continued to play competitive soccer in high school and in club and 10 have continued on to play collegiate soccer. 

3. While Punahou is considered a "large school" and unable to officially be designated as a Division 2 school, we are a 1AA school and therefore, officially compete in a division all by ourselves! However, by competing in the Division 2 league in the ILH, our student-athletes are able to strive for individual accolades within the league. 

4. A recent study by Deloitte (2023) found that 69% of women who were corporate leaders in their organizations were also student-athletes in team sports during their youth years. We want to encourage female athletes to continue competing in sport and spend as much time as they can learning how to be a great teammate and learn leadership within a team. 

Our Varsity teams are the only teams to not be "evenly-split". However, both teams are highly competitive, take travel opportunities with Punahou School and compete in the ILH. Neither team is considered a "participatory" team and we push both squads to compete at the highest level possible.
